New Summer Moonshine

Orange, Coconut, Cola, Caramel, and Pineapple add fresh twists to traditional favorite

June 1st, 2020 – PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. – Old Forge Distillery has announced five additions to its popular lineup of award-winning moonshines. New offerings for summer 2020 include Orange, Coconut, Pineapple, Cola, and Caramel flavors. The five new flavors bring the total number of hand-forged, small batch moonshines offered by the Pigeon Forge-based distillery to 23.

The new releases emphasize light, refreshing flavors that are ideal for summer. Head Distiller Keener Shanton is excited about the new products. “With summer on the way, we decided it was time for some fresh new additions to our flagship product line. I’m confident you will thoroughly enjoy these new products sipped neat, or as fun additions to your favorite sunny weather cocktails.”

Old Forge Orange, Coconut and Pineapple Moonshines are sure to appeal to lovers of tropical flavors. “Whether you enjoy sipping with a simple fruit twist or want to go all out with a tiki-bar-style cocktail party, these three have just the right amount of fruit flavor and sweetness to enhance your experience,” Shanton says.

Old Forge Cola and Old Forge Caramel Moonshines combine hugely popular, mainstream American flavors with the distillery’s Appalachian spirit. Cola has been so popular in the U.S. for so long that it’s easy to forget that it’s actually a tropical flavor, originally derived from the kola nut. “Folks who enjoy mixing a spirit with their favorite soft drink will love this one,” Shanton says.

Like colas, moonshine has long been a beloved (though not always legal) beverage in the Great Smoky Mountains region of Appalachia that the distillery calls home. When Old Forge opened its doors on the historic Old Mill Square in 2014, Shanton honored tradition by offering moonshines as the distillery’s inaugural product lineup. Many incorporated freshly ground grains from the distillery’s neighbor, The Old Mill.

In addition to his love of tradition, Shanton is a born experimenter, and was soon infusing Old Forge moonshines with unique flavors. A number of these products, including Coffee, French Toast, and Chocolate Moonshines, were inspired by flavors from the Old Mill’s famous Restaurant and Candy Kitchen. Old Forge’s new Caramel Moonshine falls into this category.

“Everybody loves the Old Mill Candy Kitchen’s handmade caramels,” Shanton explains. “And we tend to associate caramel with summer events like fairs, the Fourth of July, and trips to Grandma’s. Our Caramel Moonshine brings that sense of nostalgia in a bottle.”

The new Moonshine flavors are currently available at the distillery, its cocktail bar, and retail liquor stores that carry Old Forge products. Meanwhile, Head Distiller Shanton and the Old Forge staff are busy coming up with cocktail creations featuring the new ’shines. “Everybody pitches in to create, test, and taste,” Shanton notes. “We enjoy creating the cocktails as much as our guests enjoy drinking them!”
